Quilt For Joy
Longarm Machine Quilting &
Custom Quilt Creations
are a mother and daughter duo who share the love of fabric, sewing and
quilting. We design, create and quilt custom quilts and quilt tops. We
do a variety of styles and quilting from traditional to modern.
I was born and grew up in Southeast Michigan, took nurses
at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. I studied piano and sang in choirs
all my life. I started sewing when a teenager and have been doing it
ever since. After marrying and having 3 children I sewed for
them and even made our daughter's wedding gown.
In the 1970's I started to quilt and did all hand quilting for the
first few years. Then I started quilting using my Viking sewing
machine. Quilting a large quilt on a domestic machine was
like wrestling and to viewpoint not fun. But, there were too
quilts to made, for me to do it by hand. In 2004 we bought
"Millie," an APQS Millennium Longarm Machine. Shortly afterwards my
daughter, Mary and I started our quilting business, "Quilt For Joy."
I mainly do freehand work. I
enjoy the freedom and expressivity of freehand work and have taken
classes from some notable longarmers. I also am doing fabric
art work quilting.
Quilting and creating
fulfills something deep in my soul. I feel complete and satisfied
when I can spend even just ½ hour in my sewing room. I love
at fabric and touch fabric and dream about what I could make with it.
It is a multi-sensory experience for me. But it hasn’t always
been that way. In my teenage years, I wouldn’t even consider
sewing, or if I did, I quickly became impatient and gave up. Somewhere
in my 20’s, I started making clothes and then my mom
introduced me to quilting, to which I quickly became addicted.
been quilting for about 20 years now, and long arm machine quilting
for 10 years. I love the whole process of putting a quilt together
picking out fabric, cutting the pieces, sewing the pieces together
and quilting it. All in all, quilting brings me much joy!
I am married to a
wonderful man and we celebrated our 28th
in August. I have 3 boys and 1 girl (college grad – 9th
grade) and a dog. Our family loves to camp and we try and spend at
least one week camping each summer. Each person is creative in their
own unique way, whether it’s sewing, photography, jewelry
painting, woodworking, Lego building or computer programming.
There’s never a dull moment in our house!
